XBMC has (since the 24th of January 2007) a built-in UPnP A/V media server (UPnP-server). Originally added to help share files to other XBMC instances as a [[UPnP media source]], XBMC's UPnP server also enables you to share media with other UPnP-clients on your local network. XBMC's UPnP server can share files that are normally only locally accessible on the Host XBMC device, as well as metadata (summaries, cover art, etc) to supporting clients. As of XBMC v12, the UPnP server can also share files that are not scanned into the library.

==Compatible UPnP ControlPoints and Media-Players (UPnP-clients)==

This is a list of tested and compatible UPnP-clients that can stream from XBMC's built-in UPnP-server. This list is meant to contain the information about if it can auto-detect XBMC's UPnP-server on a local-network or if it is otherwise possible to manually enter the IP-address of XBMC so that it can stream from it, and what type of media the device support (video/audio/pictures/data). Please also feel free to add UPnP-clients that are not compatible with XBMC's built-in UPnP-server under the "UPnP software and hardware clients/players not compatible with XBMC" section. Note that UPnP clients/players can be either be categorized as 'software-based' or 'hardware-based'. Software-based clients/players can be run on PC (personal-computer), mainly on Win32, Linux, BSD, Unix or Mac operating-system platforms. And, hardware-based clients/players may be a standalone set-top DMP (Digital Media Player) boxes or any specific hardware designed to stream/play media from a UPnP-server, like for example a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) box.

Kodi has a built-in UPnP A/V media server (UPnP-server). Originally added to help share files to other Kodi instances as a UPnP media source, Kodi's UPnP server also enables you to share media with other UPnP-clients on your local network. Kodi's UPnP server can share files that are normally only locally accessible on the Host Kodi device, as well as metadata (summaries, cover art, etc) to supporting clients. As of v12, the UPnP server can also share video files that are not scanned into the library, however music still requires being added to the library to be shared.

UPnP server settings

To turn on the UPnP server in Kodi, go to Settings -> Services -> UPnP / DLNA and enable "Share video and music libraries through UPnP".
