OUYA is an Android-based game console/set-top-box. XBMC requires a test/development build to enable hardware video decoding on the OUYA, and the first stable version of XBMC with hardware video decoding is expected to be the future release of XBMC v13 "Gotham". It is a very powerful ARM device that can even handle some of the more heavy XBMC skins, in addition to outputting video at 1080.

Installing

OUYA uses XBMC for Android. We currently recommend this test build, based on Gotham Alpha 1 and libstagefright, for OUYA users. It has hardware video decoding and appears to be mostly stable:

There are newer builds of the libstagefright testing branch, but they might have additional issues because they are based on later alpha versions of XBMC, due to the unstable nature of development builds. Using the Alpha 1-based version will be more stable due to less experimental code being involved, but also might not have all of the latest libstagefright changes and fixes. More information on libstagefright can be found here: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=152005

Controller

There may be some oddities with the default controller layout. This should improve in time.

  • O = Select/Enter
  • U = Nothing
  • Y = Nothing
  • A = Back/Backspace
  • L1 = Nothing
  • L2 = Nothing
  • L3 = Select/Enter
  • R1 = Nothing
  • R2 = Nothing
  • R3 = Select/Enter
  • D-pad = Movement/Seek
  • L-Stick = Nothing
  • R-Stick = Nothing
  • Middle Button = Right-Click/Menu
  • Touchpad = Full Mouse (Left-Click only)

Notes:

  • “A” Brings up Home during playback (movie still playing in BG, no way to return w/o touchpad).
  • Select/Enter (“L3,” “R3,” & “O”) Brings up overlay during playback for pause/play/etc
  • Mouse (Touchpad) is left-click only.
  • Menu (OUYA button) if held quits app.

Note: If the on-screen keyboard does not respond to D-Pad input, go to XBMC's settings System Settings -> System -> Input Devices and enable Remote control sends keyboard presses.

Known issues

  • Seems there are some issues in creating a custom keymap for the controller.
  • Wifi on the OUYA might not be enough for some HD streams. In this case, using wired ethernet is recommended.
  • There seems to be some HDMI handshaking issues that sometimes prevent audio-passthrough from working between an OUYA and an audio receiver. A temp work around might be to unplug/replug in HDMI cables or switch video inputs to re-establish the HDMI connection.
  • OUYA's underlaying OS, Android, is limited to video output at 60Hz. Those with media that plays back at 50Hz might see occasional stutter.

Add-ons

Skins: For Skins, The default is the safest, but others that work with no (or little lag) are Bello, Aeon Nox, Hybrid, Transparency, Xeebo, and Xperience 1080.

Current Add-ons tested as Working (7/7/13):

  • trakt
  • XBMC Backup
  • Artwork Downloader
  • TVTunes (occasionally causes system lag)
  • Apple Trailers (buffering is slow)
  • Game Trailers (in 720p)
  • Hulu (720p 3200K, akaimai, no ads or pre-roll)
  • Trailer Addict (720p, but requires download path)
  • Trailer Addict
  • YouTube (hit or miss)
  • PBS

Current Add-ons tested as not Working (7/7/13):

  • ESPN
  • EpixHD
  • Free Cable
  • Rooster Teeth
