What is Xlink?
Xlink is a method (developed by Team-XLink) of online-gaming whereby system-link enabled Xbox games can be 'tricked' into being played across the internet instead of a normal LAN (Local Area Network).

For Xlink to work you must download and install the Kai software program on your computer or other device capable of running the Kai software program, <font color="red">the Kai software program is required to run for you to connect online</font>. Xlink Kai acts like a proprietary network which is 'tunnelling' XBOX system-link games over the internet. This network is provided free to all users and results in a free XBOX online-gaming network. The functionality is provided directly within the XBMC GUI, but please note that the Kai software program is required to be running on your computer in the background on your network, it is also possible to run the Kai software program other Linux based-devices (like LinkSys Wi-Fi router WRT54G/GS/GL with a special firmware, or LinkSys NSLU2 NAS device with the Linux version).

Once the Kai software is running <font color="red">(and only if the Kai software program on your computer is running)</font>, you can now access the Xlink arenas via the "Xlink" button in My Programs in XBMC GUI, (which is wrongly refered to as "XBMC-Live!" in the MC360 skin).<br>

A list of compatible system-link Xbox games can also be found on the teamxlink.co.uk website).<br>

There are four different view modes in the Xlink Section:
* Friends - Where you can view which of your Xlink "buddies" are online at the moment
* Games - Which will tell you what games are currently being hosted
* Arenas - Where you can join or host private arenas
* Chat - Where you can chat with other users of your arena

If the game supports the use of the Live Headset in system-link mode then you can use the Live headset in Xlink <font color="red">Please Note that this feature is currently unsupported by the Team-XBMC, and so please don't bug the them for Xlink support. An alpha fix for this has been added, if you have the ability please test and report back</font>

What is Kai?
Kai is a program that you run on your PC or Macintosh that allows you to play system-link / LAN-enabled games for your XBox, "GameCube" and "PlayStation 2".<br>
The software is referred to as what is known as a 'tunnelling' application. There are various other single-console tunnelling applications available, but XLink remains the only one to support all 3 major consoles... plus Sony PSP and in the future, Nintendo DS.

How to setup Kai
Go to teamxlink.co.uk and sign up for a Xlink-Kai user xtag], (register with your unique Xlink Username and Password).

You first need install the Kai software program on your computer, (Mac OS-X, Linux, and Windows Binaries are available) or install the Linux version on a other linux-devlice such as the LinkSys NSLU2 NAS, it is also possible to run the Kai software program on some Linux-based routers with a special firmware/software (example: LinkSys Wi-Fi router WRT54G/GS/GL). Just run the Kai Config and select profile Engine only (for dashboards). Fill in your username and password and hit OK. Click on "Start Kai".

Then in XBMC enter your Xlink Gamertag and Password, plus the IP-address of the computer you install the Kai software program on into the Xlink Kai Settings under My Programs Settings.

Using Xlink Kai
Kai UI Components

; Friends
: This tab lists all your available 'friends'. Think of this like a contact list in your favorite messenger program. From here you can see what arena your friends are in and join them quickly. Using the Xbox Live headset you can also voice chat with them over the internet. Simply request a chat session with them and they will get a msn-alike pop-up showing that you requested a chat. To add people to your Friends list simply find them in arena view and highlight their name, move to the left side of the screen and select 'Add'.

; Games
: This lists all the available games that have been detected on your Xbox. Follow the on screen labels to play the game of your choice. When you want to start the game select 'Play' from the left menu. To host your own game select 'Host' on the left.

; Arenas
: This lists all available arenas. It does not limit which games have been detected on your Xbox or not. To play a game from here simply enter the arena (or sub-arena for a specific game) then start the game by selecting 'Play' from the left menu. Your previously selected Arena should now appear in the game's 'system link' settings.<br>
:Alternatively you may be able to start the game in XBMC by exiting the Xlink-Kai section with the 'back' button on your gamepad and start the game manually.<br>
:To host your own game select 'Host' on the left.

; Chat
: In the Chat tab you are able to chat with the people in your current arena. Both the virtual On Screen Keyboard and also a USB Keyboard attached to your Xbox work here.<br>
:T9-like input (auto-completion like text messaging on your cell phone) is under development and will hopefully be added later.

Troubleshooting
;Question: I cannot connect to kai properly.
:Answer: Try forwarding the port on your router/firewall for Xlink to work. See teamxlink.com for more information. Also windows XP SP2 firewall and other firewall programs may interfere with Xlink kai. Be sure you open yourself to traffic from Kai. Again for more information visit teamxlink.com or #xlink on irc.efnet.info
