OUYA uses XBMC for Android. To hold users over for an official stable version of XBMC, users can download an unofficial v12 of XBMC for OUYA from the OUYA store.

For brave test users, we currently recommend this test build, based on Gotham Alpha 1 and libstagefright, for OUYA users. It has hardware video decoding and appears to be mostly stable.

Note: You can have both versions installed side-by-side and they will keep different settings.

Libstagefright is now included in normal nightly builds for Android, so if you wish to test the latest improvements (and any possible bugs), you can replace the install instructions URL with one from the nightly build URLs for Android.

A further explanation on why the Alpha 1-based libstagefright version is recommended:

The main reason we suggested the Alpha 1-based build was because it is closer to stable v12 than other builds. The issues people have with later versions are most likely just due to the fact that, as we go further into alphas and nightlies, more features are added, and thus the chance for more bugs pop up. This is a normal process that happens on all platforms, libstagefright or not. Sometimes, a later Alpha will be even more stable, then the next month it will switch back. It all depends on what is being worked on at the time. Imagine XBMC as a car, and right now in the Alpha cycles it's being torn apart, rebuilt, tweaked, and such. Sometimes it's a step forward, sometimes something new breaks. Stability is a bit like a roller coaster during the development cycle. The Alpha 1-based libstagefright has less new features, so it stands to reason it will have less new bugs. But it's a trade off, because that also means that fixes specific to libstagefright might only be available in later Alpha/nightly builds. As long as you either backup your userdata folder, or you don't mind if something breaks every so often, there's no harm in testing the latest bleeding edge version. If something is an issue, then moving backwards in Alpha builds (where less new features were added) can be one way to find a more stable build, depending on the situation. Just remember, you're not just testing libstagefright/OUYA stuff, but everything that is being added to the next version of XBMC. There's no real risk in bricking it, so I would say go ahead and try that latest nightly build and see what happens. You can always go to one of the more stable versions later on if something goes wrong.

Steps

There are several methods to installing XBMC to Ouya, and this page describes an "Out-of-the-Box" method.

  Step 1: First go to the developer section (the Make tab) in Ouya, select Yes or "okay" to enter the developer section.

  Step 2: Open the default browser and then press Y on the controller to enter in your own URL.

• 

  Step 3: Go to http://goo.gl/gkdvk (it's just a symlink to "http://mirrors.xbmc.org/test-builds/android/xbmc-20130219-32e99c7-android-hwaccel-armeabi-v7a.apk")

  Step 4: The download is 50.3 MB and depending on connection can take a while (1 min on 60mb/s), during the download you won't be able to tell the progress unless you have installed Chrome or ES File Explorer.
  (If you have ES File Explorer you can just open after it finishes and install).

  Step 5: Once the download completes, navigate to the Manage tab -> System -> Advanced.

  Step 6: Select Storage and then scroll down to Downloads (some have noted that a reboot of the OUYA may be required after your first download to have this section appear).

  Step 7: There will be a list of all the downloads, select the XBMC download and click install.

• 

  Step 8: ...and you're done! XBMC will be under the Make tab.
