Home icon grey.png   ▶ General topics ▶ Video library

This section covers topics and guides covering playing videos, the video library, video management, scanning content in, playing video content off the internet, and more. The Video Library allows the organization of your video content by information such as genre, title, year, actors and directors, smart playlists, advanced search and filtering, custom sections, etc. Kodi will search the internet and download rich metadata for your videos, such as cover art, summaries, and cast credits.

icon Video management
Now that you have your library setup and have become confident with using Kodi, you can start experimenting with modifying your library so it better suits your preferences.

This page will guide you to other wiki pages that are commonly used to modify the library.

The use of artwork will transform your mundane media player into a showpiece to be proud of, especially when teamed up with your favourite skin. Kodi will allow you to display Posters, Fanart, Album Covers, Actor and Artist images to name a few. Install the Picture Slideshow add-on, and you will have a constant display of video or music fanart to brighten your entertainment room.

How-tos

Assorted how-tos related to the video library that have been added to the wiki:

HOW-TO:Modify dirty regions
Dirty regions is an advanced setting and interface rendering method that can help speed up the GUI in Kodi and decrease the demand on your CPU and GPU. Dirty regions has no effect during video playback unless there are GUI elements (on screen buttons) visible. Using dirty regions requires Kodi v11 (Eden) or higher.
HOW-TO:Modify the video cache
This page describes three advancedsettings.xml settings that can be used to maximize the video playback cache. You can use all or just a couple of these settings to see significant improvements in cache performance, should you require it (most users will not require these modifications). This can help with intermittent network issues, buffering, reduce how long the network is tied up, and sometimes improve battery life.
HOW-TO:Set up subtitle services
As per Kodi v13 "Gotham", subtitles support is now built into Kodi. And instead of downloading a full subtitle download add-on, you now install one (or more) specific subtitle services.
HOW-TO:Modify automatic watch and resume points
This page describes three advancedsettings.xml settings that can be used to modify when "watched" and "resume" marks are saved. These settings can also be used to prevent automatically saving watched and resume points. A watched point records if a video has been watched or not. A resume point records where in a video file playback has stopped, so it can be resumed later.
Video file tagging
Kodi v18 Leia introduces support for embedded video tags using *.mkv and *.mp4 video files. *.avi support is available since v18.x. They are similar in principle to the tags saved in audio files. Only limited support for video tags is available at this time.
HOW-TO:Modify time seeking
This page describes various advancedsettings.xml settings that can be used to modify the default seek "steps" in Kodi, commonly mapped to the directional keys during playback (left, right, up, down). By default, up/down is "BigStepForward/Back" +/- 10 minutes, and left/right is "StepForward/Back" +/- 30 seconds. There is also "SmallStepBack", which is -7 seconds. All of these options can be modified.
