General

Video Calibration This option opens the window in which you can calibrate your video playback. It offers the ability to adjust The overscan of the video - How close to the edges of the screen that the image is displayed The positition where subtitles are displayed The position of the on screen display The pixel ratio - allows you calibrate the aspect ratio at which videos are played back Use External DVD Player Allows you to select an external player to play DVD video, as opposed to using the integrated DVDPlayer External DVD Player With the above option enabled, prompts you to browse for the external DVD player to use.

Files Enable Autoswitching to Thumbs View Can be used to automatically view the contents of a folder in the thumbnail view, as opposed to the list view, based on the criteria that you set. Use Large Icons Will use large thunbnails, as opposed to normal-sized thumbs

Player

Configure Audio Hardware Opens the Audio Configuration Menu Render Method Controls the method used by the player to process and display the video, (which is called rendering). See Here for more information on the different options. Resolution Controls the resolution at which video is displayed. It causes XBMC to upsample / downsample the video to the selected format. Framerate Conversion Allows you to play PAL videos at NTSC framerates and vice-versa Bypass CD Selection Allows you to skip the CD Selection dialog, which is usually displayed after clicking on a stacked movie file. Auto resume from last position When enabled, XBMC will automatically resume videos always from the last position that you were viewing them, even after restarting the system. Note: You can also start a movie from the last stopped position by opening the context-menu on a movie file (white button on the gamepad) or by just clicking the "Play" button on the remote without the need to have this option enabled.

Postprocessing

Post-processing Filter Allows you to enable / disable the processing applied to videos by XBMC (played with MPlayer) to make them appear better on screen. It allows for the following options: Automatic Post-processing Chooses an amount of filtering based on perceived image quality and spare CPU time. Note that the Automatic Post-processing function in XBMC is currently broken and makes the output worse instead of better, see the bug-report here. Vertical Deblocking Filter Where blocking becomes visible you may begin to recognize that the picture is actually composed of a lot of small squares that move around as the video plays. De-blocking is a post-processing technique applied by the decoder on-the-fly to reduce the blocking effect, helping to blend adjacent blocks together smoothly. This filter smoothes out the vertical edges; the associated number parameter denotes the smoothness. Too high a number will make the screen look foggy and increase CPU load. Auto Brightness/Contrast Attempts to compensate the picture of movies which are too shot too light/dark/foggy. May produce artificially looking colors on bad source material. Dering Ringing is typically most visible around highly contrasting edges in the picture. Where ringing occurs it is possible to see subtle bands of color around the contours of these edges. De-ringing is a post-processing technique applied by the decoder on the fly to remove these faintly colored bands, helping to improve the playback quality. Video Filters Flicker Filter Sets the amount of flicker filter applied while videos are playing. We recommend you keep this as low as possible, and for best possible quality set it to 0. Defaults to 1. Soften Denotes whether the soften filter is applied during video playback. It is recommended that this is set off for optimal quality. Defaults to off. Use Smoothed A/V Synchronization Causes the player to adjust audio/video synchronization more gradually. Enabling this option will reduce playback problems caused by poor a/v synchronization, but has the drawback of creating a short delay in the system's reaction time in correcting synchronization problems.
