The music database is one of xbmc's strongest points. It allows organization of very large music collections by genre, title, artist, album and popularity.

To get the most out of your music xbmc needs to have all this information available to it. When your collection is scanned XBMC stores all the tagging information (artist, album, year, genre) in a database which allows you to efficently search and manage your music collection.
+
__NOTOC__
If you have never taken the time to tag your music properly, this is it. Today more pc applications and mp3 players (ipods for example) organize your music by tag information. You MUST tag your files for them to work properly in XBMC's library.

To start scanning your music change the my music view to 'files'. Then proceed to browse to the location of your music collection and press the while button. This shows the context menu with various options. Select the entry labeled "Scan folder to database". XBMC will then proceed to scan the music in the background. Once this is complete you can browse your collection but changing the view to 'Library'.<br>

Note that scanning in this example would scan all directories listed including full albums, singles, and unsorted.

The Music section of Kodi consists of a powerful and feature rich library that allows the flexible sorting and organization of your music collection.

1 Topic navigation

icon Guide to Create, Modify and Re-build your Music Library
The aim of these modules is to provide the required information to enable you to correctly set up, modify, and reinstate your Music library as required. As this guide is created for the new user, most pages have been created with minimal jargon and short explanations in an effort to reduce information overload and confusion. Where extra information is provided, note is made to what can be safely ignored.
icon Music Videos
Kodi has the ability to include Music Videos in the Video and Music libraries. All scanned music videos will show up in both. Music Videos can also be part of Party Mode and Smart Playlists. Playlists containing both music and music videos should be stored in the mixed playlist subfolder under the userdata folder.
icon Music Navigation & Music Playback
This page will provide information to navigate around the music section and the various ways to play your music.
icon Audiobooks
Audiobooks using the .m4b or .mka format and contain two or more chapters are natively handled in Kodi without the need for additional add-ons or special setup.
icon Index of Music articles
A listing of Music related pages
icon Settings Main Page
The Music Settings are located on various pages depending upon the function of the setting.

Library Maintenance tasks can be found in Media>Library
How music is collected, stored and displayed can be set in Settings>Media>Music
How Audio Discs are handled can be found in Settings>Player>Discs
Preferences related to music playback can be found in Settings>Player>Music

HOW-TO:Share libraries using UPnP
UPnP sharing between two Kodi devices is the easiest way to share a library. You can also share multiple libraries, one from each Kodi device, to all the other devices on the same network. UPnP also takes care of file sharing, so you do not need to do anything extra even if your files are added locally to Kodi.
