CuBox-i series (which includes CuBoxTV) is SolidRun's second-generation family of multi-purpose ARM-based mini-computers that is capable of running either Kodi on Android or on Linux, both using firmware images provided by SolidRun development team and third-parties of which many comes with Kodi pre-installed.

With its hardware built around SolidRun MicroSOM platform the CuBox-i series uses scalable and open source friendly Freescale i.MX6 family of SoC (System-on-Chip) ranging from a single to quad ARM Cortex-A9 processor cores, 2D/3D hardware graphics processing unit, video decoding and encoding acceleration hardware, and HDMI 1.4 1080p 3D output support.

Overview

CuBox-i (and the original first-generation CuBox) are series of small and fanless nettop-class computers manufactured by the Israeli company SolidRun Ltd. They are all cube-shaped and sized at only approximately 2 × 2 × 2 inches and weigh 91 grams (0.2 lb, or 3.2 oz).

The original CuBox was first announced in December 2011 and began shipping in January 2012, initially being marketed as a cheap open source developer platform for embedded systems. This first-generation CuBox was November 2013, according to SolidRun themselves, the first commercially available desktop computer based on the Marvell Armada 500-series SoC (System-on-Chip), and was at the time said to be the world's smallest desktop computer. The first-generation CuBox was however not very well suited for Kodi usage, but in November 2013, SolidRun released the Cubox-i1, i2, i2eX, and i4Pro, (and later also CuBox-i TV), all containing Freescale i.MX 6 SoC (System-on-Chip), which is a platform that is much better suited for Kodi usage.

Notes:

  1. The CuBox-i2ultra has been replaced by the CuBox-i2eX. The only difference is that WiFi/BlueTooth is now optional
  2. 1000Mbps link is limited to 470Mbps actual bandwidth due to internal chip bus limitation

Notes
1. Install the micro-SD card so that the contacts face UP (towards the HDMI port). To ensure contact, the card must be fully inserted, with no portion extending beyond the edge of the CuBox.
