<section begin="intro" />Kodi is designed to have a 10-foot interface. For best results, use Kodi on a TV operated from a couch with a remote control, not with a keyboard and mouse.

This page explains how to use Kodi’s menu and home screen, using the default skin, Estuary. <section end="intro" />If you are using a different Kodi skin, you can change back.
The interface for the music library and video libraries have their own pages.

Kodi’s home screen and menu
When you first run Kodi, you will see the Power, System and Search buttons in the top-left corner. Kodi’s main menu is under these buttons. When a library is highlighted in the main menu, content of that kind is shown on the home screen to the right.

<gallery mode="packed" widths="600px" heights="338px">
File: LeiaEstuaryHomeScreen.png
</gallery>

If you are not at the main menu, you can usually make a sideblade menu appear by pressing left on a remote control or keyboard, or by moving the mouse cursor to the left edge of the screen.

Power
Click the Power button or press S on the keyboard to bring up the Power options. The options available here will vary depending on your device.

;Exit
:Close Kodi and return to the operating system.
;Power off system
:Turn off your computer.
;Custom Shutdown Timer
:Turn off your computer after waiting a set time (in minutes).
Main Page: System

Most of Kodi’s system settings are found here. Advanced users can create and modify Kodi’s advancedsettings.xml file for more options.

Search
Click the Search button to search in your library or your add-ons. You can also search on YouTube and The Movie Database.

Some of the search options will ask you to allow Kodi to download and install an add-on.

Add-on:Global Search
Add-on:YouTube
Add-on:ExtendedInfo Script

You can search within one library, by typing in the Filter field in the sideblade menu. The sideblade menu is not available when the main menu is open - you must click to select the library first.
*The Filter will only filter the selected class of media, so using the filter in Movies will only return results in the Movies library.
*The Filter only works when you have a list of media displayed. If you do not have a list of media to filter, then the filter will return a Not Found result.

The main menu
Open Kodi’s settings and different media libraries from the main menu. Some custom skins let you add extra menu items.

You can remove menu items and add them again later. See: Hiding menu items.

When a library, like Movies or Music, is selected, the home screen on the right will show that kind of content. You can browse movies and categories of movie on the home screen, or you can click the menu item to see a list of all content of that type.
Menu options are:

* Movies – See all movies in the video library, sorted by title.
* TV shows – See all TV shows in the video library, sorted by title.
* Music – See all music in the music library. You can sort by genre, artist, album, song, or year.
* Music Videos – See all music videos in the video library. You can sort by genre, artist, album, song, director, studio, or tag.
* Live TV – With a Personal Video Recording (PVR) add-on, you can watch free-to-air TV with an Electronic Program Guide (EPG). Live TV can pause, record, rewind, and fast forward.
* Radio – With a Personal Video Recording (PVR) add-on, you can listen to free-to-air radio with an Electronic Program Guide (EPG).
* Games – Only available in Kodi v18 Leia and later. See your games in the file manager.
* Add-ons – See a list of installed add-ons, sorted by type (Video add-ons, Music add-ons, Program add-ons). Here you can install add-ons from the official Kodi repository. See: Add-ons
* Pictures – See your picture albums in an image viewer, and any related add-ons.
* Vidoes – See all videos and video add-ons. This item has even more nodes to filter content – for example, by year or actor – and you can make custom nodes and playlists.
* Favourites – Show all items tagged as favourite.
* Weather – See the weather forecast for your chosen area.

The home screen
The home screen dynamically changes to show results for the highlighted menu item, and lets you browse different categories. As an example, here is what you will see when the Movies library is selected.

NOTE: This feature only works for files that have been added to a library. Choosing the Information page for a file in the file browser that has not been added to a library, will perform a data scrape for that title.

See: Updating a video library.

To open a title’s Information page, highlight the title, then:

Welcome to Kodi.

Kodi is an award-winning, open-source software media centre that supports various audio and video formats, plays Live TV, and can be enhanced with powerful add-ons.

Kodi is designed to be the center of a home theater with a 10-foot interface, not to be used on a small monitor at your desk. Because everything is designed with the home theater experience in mind, Kodi is optimized for use with a remote control, rather than a keyboard and mouse.

Think of Kodi as the ultimate digital media player.

<section begin="intro" />We recommend that you follow these guides to set up and personalize your Kodi installation so that it works as intended. This wiki has many detailed guides, useful for both new and experienced users.<section end="intro" /> The Kodi Menu on the wiki Main page explains in detail how to use each Kodi module.

First, download and install the Kodi software. There are installation guides for first time users for all supported operating systems.

Kodi opposes copyright infringement
Kodi does not sell hardware, nor are we affiliated with, or promotors of, any of the so-called ‘Kodi boxes’ that are advertised for sale. Do not purchase these devices. They often come pre-installed with add-ons used for piracy and copyright infringement, and some have been known to contain malware. The Kodi forum does not provide support for these devices.

The Kodi interface
Read about Kodi's controls and interface to familiarize yourself with Kodi.

Using libraries
Kodi is capable of deep engagement with media metadata by adding media files to audio or video libraries. You can sort movies by director, search for all videos featuring a particular actor, or zip through the album covers in your music collection to choose a soundtrack for your evening.

Kodi’s libraries are accessible from the Main Menu, where you can select from Music, Movies, TV Shows or Music Videos.

There are two kinds of Kodi library – music and video. Media files must be added to make use of all the features of a library.
Hi Karellen,

Whoops, sorry! I'll add the sections titles back to articles that had them now. I don't have privileges to actually move pages, I just changed the Settings page to display 'System' as its title -- it *would* be good if the page name displayed in Kodi matched the name in the wiki, but I probably should've asked about it on the Talk page instead of going ahead and changing it.

First time user

Welcome to Kodi.

Kodi is an award-winning, open-source software media centre that supports various audio and video formats, plays Live TV, and can be enhanced with powerful add-ons.

Kodi is designed to be the center of a home theater with a 10-foot interface, not to be used on a small monitor at your desk. Because everything is designed with the home theater experience in mind, Kodi is optimized for use with a remote control, rather than a keyboard and mouse.

Think of Kodi as the ultimate digital media player.

We recommend that you follow these guides to set up and personalize your Kodi installation so that it works as intended. This wiki has many detailed guides, useful for both new and experienced users. The Kodi Menu on the wiki Main page explains in detail how to use each Kodi module.

Index two column

If you do not want to create libraries and take advantage of these features, you can hide menu items and access your media through the built-in file browser from the main menu, by selecting Videos then Files.

Kodi is designed to have a 10-foot interface. For best results, use Kodi on a TV operated from a couch with a remote control, not with a keyboard and mouse.

This page explains how to use Kodi’s menu and home screen, using the default skin, Estuary. If you are using a different Kodi skin, you can change back.

File: LeiaEstuaryHomeScreen.png
</gallery>

If you are not at the main menu, you can usually make a sideblade menu appear by pressing left on a remote control or keyboard, or by moving the mouse cursor to the left edge of the screen.

As an example, here is what you will see when the Movies library is selected.

;Categories (or Nodes)
The sideblade menu
The sideblade menu is accessible from most screens in Kodi except the main menu. You can make it appear by pressing left on a remote control or keyboard, or by moving the mouse cursor to the left edge of the screen.

The sideblade menu is divided into View options and Actions.

As an example, here is what you will see on the Movies sideblade menu.

; View options

*Open the Now playing screen.

The context menu
The context menu gives you quick access to a few key functions. The context menu items change, depending what you have selected.

To see the context menu:
* on a remote control, long press the OK key
* on a keyboard, press C
* right-click with the mouse

Here are some example context menus.
Every music video, TV show, and movie has an Information page, which shows the title’s metadata. There are several options on the bottom of the page, depending on your chosen skin, and the type of video selected.

NOTE: This feature only works for files that have been added to a library. Choosing the Information page for a file in the file browser that has not been added to a library, will perform a data scrape for that title.

See: Updating a video library.

To open a title’s Information page, highlight the title, then:
*Press i on a remote control or a keyboard
*Open the context menu and choose Information

Some of the options available are:
;Actor’s portrait
:Show other titles in the library with the same actor.
:Installing the ExtendedInfo add-on will show extra actor information from online sources.
;Play
:Play the title.
;Your Rating
:Rate the title.
;Trailer
:Play the Trailer from The Movie Database. If no trailer is found, either the button will not be displayed or you will be offered to install the YouTube add-on to view online trailers.
;Show Fanart
:View full screen fanart for the title.
;Same director
:Show other titles in the library with the same director.
;Movie Set
:Show any movie sets (series) that the movie is part of. Only shown if the movie is part of a series.
;Choose art
:Choose Artwork for the title.
;Refresh
:Re-scan or re-scrape the title. Useful if you have changed information in the NFO File, or if you want to re-scrape for updated information from the Information provider.
:See: Updating video libraries.
:Highlighting this button will display the path to the playable file in Kodi's library database. Useful to find duplicate entries.

Playback controls
On-screen keyboard
Kodi shows an on-screen keyboard when needed, which can be used to type by clicking with a remote control or mouse.

If a physical keyboard is connected, you can still type with that.
To install the most recent stable version of Kodi for Windows, go to http://kodi.tv/download/849. This is the recommended version for most users.
__TOC__
Choosing a version
Recommended
The recommended version of Kodi is the current release '. This is the stable build and is recommended for general users.

You can download Kodi from the Windows store, which will keep Kodi updated automatically, or you can download an executable installer file (.exe).

Pre-release
WARNING: Pre-release builds should be considered unstable and might cause crashes and loss of data. These builds might include bugs and missing or broken features.

The Pre-release version is an early build of the next version of Kodi. The pre-release builds progress from Alpha to Beta to Release Candidate as they get closer to release.

Pre-release Builds are only for users who want to help improve Kodi by testing and providing feedback on any issues that are discovered.

If you want a stable and stress-free Kodi experience, install the recommended stable build.

Always backup before running a pre-release build.

Development builds
WARNING: Development builds should be considered unstable and might cause crashes and loss of data. These builds might include experimental changes, bugs, and missing or broken features.

<section begin="Development Builds" />Kodi development builds, or ‘Nightlies’, are nightly snapshots of the current development version. These builds are earlier and more experimental than pre-releases.

Development builds are only for users who want to help improve Kodi by testing and providing feedback on any issues that are discovered.
Complaints made on the forum about missing or broken features in development builds will be met with silence at best.

If you want a stable and stress-free Kodi experience, install the recommended stable build.

Always backup before running a pre-release build.
<section end="Development Builds" />

Choosing an install method
You can choose from several different ways to install Kodi.

Installer
An executable installer file (.exe) can be downloaded from the Kodi downloads page.

* Choose the correct installer for your system. (In Windows 10, you can check whether your system is 64-bit or 32-bit in Settings. Choose System, then About. Under Device specifications, check System type. This will tell you whether you are running a 64-bit or 32-bit version of Windows.)

* After the download has finished, run the installer and accept the terms of the licence agreement. You can then choose where to install Kodi.

The following video guide shows you how to install Kodi with the executable installer.

Microsoft Store
Kodi can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store using the link on the downloads page.

The Microsoft Store version is the current release, and will be updated automatically. The Microsoft Store version can run on Windows 10 S.

You can read about the introduction of the Windows Store version of Kodi on the Windows Store Blog.

Chocolatey
If you have Chocolatey installed, you can run the command-line installer. Visit the Kodi Package page at Chocolately for instructions.

Portable mode
<section begin="PortableMode" />You can run Kodi in portable mode (Windows only). This gives you the flexibility to run more than one instance of the current version, or several different versions of Kodi – for example, to set up a basic installation for testing.

Follow these steps to install additional Kodi setups on the same computer.

Complete all steps before running Kodi.

# Download then run the executable installer file (.exe) for the version of Kodi you want to install. You must change the installation location from the default location. You can choose a removable drive, a different internal drive, or a different folder on the same internal drive.
# Find the Kodi.exe application in the folder you just installed. Right-click the application, and choose ‘Create shortcut’.
# Right-click the shortcut you created, and choose ‘Properties’. In the ‘Target’ text field, add -p (dash + P) after the file location.

It should look like this:
<code>“E:\Kodi v18\kodi.exe” -p</code>

You can now run the portable version of Kodi by opening this shortcut.

NOTE:
*This shortcut enables Portable Mode. If you create another shortcut and fail to add the -p switch, or start this portable version of Kodi in a different way, then the default userdata folder will be created, and might overwrite your standard installation of Kodi, if you have one.
*The Kodi folder which you nominated above will be used to host the data folder (where Kodi stores scripts, plugins, skins and userdata) in a subfolder named portable_data. If this folder is deleted or overwritten, your saved data might be lost.

<section end="PortableMode" />

Upgrading Kodi
The dedicated team of Kodi volunteers are always working to improve and enhance your Kodi experience. Several times a year, new stable versions of Kodi are released.

Before upgrading Kodi:
* Backup your data by following the backup guide. See: Backup.
* Ensure your computer still meets Kodi’s minimum requirements in Supported hardware.
* If you use add-ons or skins, check if they have been upgraded to work with the new version of Kodi. If the upgrade is a decimal upgrade (e.g., 18.x to 18.y), all add-ons and skins should still work.

You can upgrade by installing the new version of Kodi by following the installation instructions above. You do not need to uninstall the old version.

The following video guide might help you with this process.

Upgrading from XBMC
Migration from XBMC to Kodi

If you are using a version of XBMC, you must follow the instructions in this guide to upgrade to the latest stable release of Kodi.

Ensure your hardware meets the minimum requirements before upgrading.

NOTE: Older add-ons and skins might not be compatible with the current version of Kodi. Before upgrading, check that any add-ons or skins you need have been upgraded to work in the current version of Kodi.

Installing older versions of Kodi
Older versions of Kodi 32-bit can be found here.

Uninstalling Kodi
Kodi is installed in folders in two places. You must remove both folders to completely uninstall it.

The Kodi application
The Kodi program is installed by default to <code>C:\Program Files\Kodi\</code>, or in <code>C:\Program Files (x86)\Kodi\</code> if you upgraded from an older version.
To uninstall the Kodi application in Windows 10:
# Open Settings
# Choose Apps, then ‘Apps and features’
# Select Kodi in the list of apps
# Choose Uninstall.

To uninstall the Kodi application in Windows 7 or Windows 8:
# Open Control Panel
# Choose ‘Programs and Features’
# Select Kodi in the list of apps
# Choose Uninstall

The Kodi data folder
After you install Kodi, all changes to Kodi are saved in a data folder. This includes things like your userdata, libraries, skins, and add-ons.

* If you downloaded and ran the Kodi executable installer file (.exe) manually, the folder will be at <code>C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Roaming\Kodi</code>
* If you downloaded Kodi from the Microsoft Store, the folder will be at <code>C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Local\Packages\XBMCFoundation.Kodi_4n2hpmxwrvr6p\LocalCache\Roaming\Kodi</code>

If you delete the data folder to do a clean installation of Kodi, the data folders will be recreated the next time you run Kodi.<br>
If you want to retain the data folder for backup purposes, rename the Kodi folder to something like Kodi-Old. See: Backup

Complete Uninstall
To completely uninstall Kodi, uninstall the application, then delete the data folder.

Windows Defender
Windows Defender SmartScreen is a feature of Windows that blocks software it does not recognise to protect your computer.

If you download the installer immediately after a new version of Kodi is released, Windows Defender Smartscreen might block the installer.

If the Kodi installer is blocked, click ‘More info’ then ‘Run anyway’ to continue installing Kodi.

<gallery widths="400" heights="400">
File:WinDefender01.JPG|If you see this dialogue box, click More info.
File:WinDefender02.JPG|After the text expands, click Run anyway.
File:WinDefender03.jpg|If you do not see ‘Run anyway’, Windows Defender might be set to Block instead of Warn. This setting can be changed in Windows Security.
</gallery>
NOTE: Changing settings in Windows Security can make your computer less safe. If you are unsure whether to continue, consider installing Kodi through the Microsoft Store or waiting a few days until Windows Defender recognises the new version of Kodi.

To stop Windows Defender SmartScreen blocking the Kodi installer, turn off ‘Check apps and files’ in ‘App & browser control’ in Windows Security, then install Kodi. Remember to turn on 'Check apps and files' after installation is complete.

What next?
Open Kodi from the Start menu, by expanding the Kodi folder, then choosing the Kodi app.
When you first run Kodi, you will be told that your library is empty.
To start adding media to your Kodi library, see the Wiki section for first time users.

Welcome to Kodi
Kodi is award-winning, open-source media centre software that supports various audio and video formats, plays Live TV, and can be enhanced with powerful add-ons. Guides for installing Kodi on several different operating systems are available on the first time user wiki page.

We recommend you follow these guides to set up and personalize your Kodi installation to ensure that it works as intended. This wiki has many details guides, useful for both new and experienced users. The Kodi Menu on the wiki Main page explains in detail how to use each Kodi module.

First, download and install the Kodi software. There are installation guides for first time users for all supported operating systems.

The Kodi interface
Read this page to familiarize yourself with Kodi’s menu system and interface.

Using libraries
Kodi is capable of deep engagement with media metadata by adding media files to audio or video libraries. You can sort movies by director, search for everything starring a particular actor, or zip through the album covers in your music collection to choose a soundtrack for your evening.

Kodi’s libraries are accessible from the Main Menu, where you can select from Music, Movies, TV Shows or Music Videos.

There are two kinds of Kodi library – music and video. Media files must be added to make use of all the features of a library.

If you do not want to create libraries and take advantage of these features, you can hide menu items and access your media through the built-in file browser from the main menu, by selecting Videos then Files.

Be aware that using this mode, Kodi becomes a simple file browser and media player with limited functionality – many Kodi features are only available through libraries, like extended artwork and movie information.

Adding pictures
Pictures
The Pictures module allows you to add a photo or picture collection to Kodi. Pictures do not yet have library functions. If you set up video or music files sources, you will be familiar with setting up a source for pictures.

Adding games
Games
Games are not supported in Kodi versions before v18 Leia. The Games module allows you to add stand-alone games and games running in emulators which can be launched from Kodi.

The Games module does not yet have library functions and is effectively a file browser. As of Kodi v18 Leia there is an input manager with game controller settings for configuring gamepads, joysticks, keyboards, and mouses, for use with games running natively inside Kodi's runtime.

Using a remote control
Remote controls

Changing skins
HOW-TO:Change skins

Kodi comes with over forty different cosmetic skins. For a list of installed skins and to download more, go to:
__TOC__
Choosing a version
To install the most recent stable version of Kodi for Windows, go to http://kodi.tv/download/849.
Recommended
The recommended version of Kodi is the current release '. This version is the stable build and is recommended for general users.

You can download Kodi from the Windows store, which will keep Kodi updated automatically, or you can download an executable installer file (.exe).
Pre-release
The Pre-release version is an early build of the next version of Kodi.

PRE-RELEASE BUILDS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED UNSTABLE AND MIGHT CAUSE CRASHES AND LOSS OF DATA.

THESE BUILDS MIGHT INCLUDE BUGS AND MISSING OR BROKEN FEATURES.

<section begin="Development Builds" />Kodi development builds, or ‘Nightlies’, are nightly snapshots of the current development version. These builds are earlier and more experimental than pre-releases.

DEVELOPMENT BUILDS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED UNSTABLE AND MIGHT CAUSE CRASHES AND LOSS OF DATA.

THESE BUILDS MIGHT INCLUDE EXPERIMENTAL CHANGES, BUGS AND MISSING OR BROKEN FEATURES.

<section end="Development Builds" />

* After the download has finished, run the installer.

* Accept the terms of the licence agreement, then choose where to install Kodi.

The following video guide might help you with this process.

Microsoft Store
Kodi can be downloaded from the Windows store using the link on the downloads page.

The Windows store version is the current release, and will be updated automatically. The Windows store version can run on Windows 10 S.

NOTE: For portable installations, the Kodi folder will be used as the data folder (where Kodi stores scripts, plugins, skins and userdata). If this folder is deleted or overwritten, your saved data might be lost.
<section end="PortableMode" />
Upgrading Kodi
The dedicated team of Kodi volunteers are always working to improve and enhance your Kodi experience. Several times a year, new stable versions of Kodi are released.

BEFORE UPGRADING KODI:
* Backup your data by following the instructions here.

If you are still using a version of XBMC, you must follow the instructions in this guide to upgrade to the latest stable release of Kodi.

Ensure your hardware meets the minimum requirements before upgrading.

Ensure all add-ons and skins you use have also been upgraded to work in the current version of Kodi.
Installing older versions of Kodi
Older versions of Kodi can be found at http://mirrors.kodi.tv/releases/win32/old/.
Uninstalling Kodi
Kodi is installed in folders in two places. You must remove both folders to completely uninstall it.
The Kodi application
The Kodi program is installed by default to <code>C:\Program Files\Kodi\</code>.

If you delete the data folder to do a clean installation of Kodi, the data folders will be created again the first time you run Kodi.
Complete Uninstall
To completely uninstall Kodi, uninstall the application then delete the data folder.

<gallery widths="400" heights="400">
</gallery>
NOTE: Changing settings in Windows Security can make your computer less safe. Consider installing Kodi through the Microsoft Store or waiting a few days until Microsoft Defender recognises the new version of Kodi.

Changing Skins
Kodi comes with over forty different cosmetic skins. For a list of installed skins and to download more, go to:

<section begin="Development Builds" />Kodi development builds, or ‘Nightlies’, are nightly snapshots of the current development version. These builds are earlier and more experimental than pre-releases.

DEVELOPMENT BUILDS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED UNSTABLE AND MIGHT CAUSE CRASHES AND LOSS OF DATA.

THESE BUILDS MIGHT INCLUDE EXPERIMENTAL CHANGES, BUGS AND MISSING OR BROKEN FEATURES.

<section end="Development Builds" />

NOTE: For portable installations, the Kodi folder will be used as the data folder (where Kodi stores scripts, plugins, skins and userdata). If this folder is deleted or overwritten, your saved data might be lost.
Upgrading Kodi
The dedicated team of Kodi volunteers are always working to improve and enhance your Kodi experience. Several times a year, new stable versions of Kodi are released.

BEFORE UPGRADING KODI:
* Backup your data by following the instructions here.

Migration_from_XBMC_to_Kodi

If you are still using a version of XBMC, you must follow the instructions in this guide to upgrade to the latest stable release of Kodi.

Ensure your hardware meets the minimum requirements before upgrading.

Older versions of Kodi can be found at http://mirrors.kodi.tv/releases/win32/old/
Uninstalling Kodi
Kodi is installed in folders in two places. You must remove both folders to completely uninstall it.
The Kodi application
The Kodi program is installed by default to <code>C:\Program Files\Kodi\</code>.

If you delete the data folder to do a clean installation of Kodi, the data folders will be created again the first time you run Kodi.
Complete Uninstall
To completely uninstall Kodi, uninstall the application then delete the data folder.

<gallery widths="400" heights="400">
</gallery>
NOTE: Changing settings in Windows Security can make your computer less safe. Consider installing Kodi through the Microsoft Store or waiting a few days until Microsoft Defender recognises the new version of Kodi.

To stop Windows Defender SmartScreen blocking the Kodi installer, turn off ‘Check apps and files’ in ‘App & browser control’ in Windows Security, then install Kodi. Remember to turn on 'Check apps and files' after installation is complete.
What next?
