Enigma2 backends are set-top boxes which connect directly to a television via HDMI, supporting satellite, terrestrial and cable TV depending on the make, model and configuration. In addition these set-top boxes have a network connection that Kodi PVR can connect to for channel, guide and streaming purposes via its WebIf (Web interface).
In general all Enigma2 based set top boxes should be supported, once they run OpenWebIf (full feature set) or a different WebIf (original feature set only).

Some features that may not work on WebIfs other than ```OpenWebIf```:

* Autotimers
* Drive Space Reporting
* Embedded EPG Genre IDs
* Full Tuner Signal Support (Including Service Providers)
* Timer and Recording descriptions: If your provider only uses short description (plot outline) instead of long description (plot) then info will not be displayed pertaining to the shows in question. For OpenWebIf clients a JSON API is available to populate the missing data.
* Edit recording name, last played position and play count for recordings
* Bouquet (and group specific) Backend Channel Numbers

While the Enigma2 software was originally developed by Dream Multimedia for their [[w:Dreambox|Dreambox]] series, the [http://opendreambox.org opendreambox.org] has made Enigma2 into an popular open source based firmware platform for set-top boxes and it is used by a number of different set-top box manufacturers, including the most commonly known are [[w:Dreambox|Dreambox]], [[w:DBox2|DBox2]], and [[w:Vu+|Vu+ (VuPlus)]], which all use Enigma2 based firmware images. Most of these Enigma2 based set-top boxes falls under the category of Linux-powered satellite, terrestrial and cable digital television receivers.

With the Enigma2 PVR add-on Kodi PVR can be used also with any Enigma2 based set-top boxes running OpenWebIf. Other WebIfs are supported with a subset of the original functionality.

Kodi Add-ons are extensions that can be run from inside the Kodi GUI. They are usually written by third party developers and published to our official repository. Add-ons are of three types:

kodi will run the plugin again to retrieve another listing. If a file is clicked, kodi will either play the file directly or call the addon to retrieve a playable url.

Another difference is that scripts can create their own gui (skin) while plugins can't. Plugin listings are presented in the current skin.

Do not try to mix and match script and plugin functionality as that will only give you weird error messages.

== MythTV ==

Files that are played through the integrated [[MythTV]] support have the commercial breaks loaded from mythbackend.

Scene Markers are additionally put in at the beginning and end of the flagged commercial breaks.

= Merging or Removing Short Commercial Breaks =

The [[Advancedsettings.xml#.3Cedl.3E|<edl> section of advancedsettings.xml]] can be used to:
* Merge commercial breaks within a set of commercials that haven't been detected accurately. Very useful if you find that automatically skipped commercial breaks still end up within a set of commercial breaks.
* Remove commercial breaks that are incorrectly identified outside of a likely set of commercial breaks. Very useful if you find that commercial skipping is happening unexpectedly while watching the TV show or Movie.

= Altering Automatic Skip Timings =

The [[Advancedsettings.xml#.3Cedl.3E|<edl> section of advancedsettings.xml]] also can be used to:
* Set how long to wait before automatically skipping when the start of a commercial break is reached. Useful if the automatic skip at the start of a set of commercial breaks is happening slightly too early for your liking, particularly if you aren't ever quite sure if that was a commercial that was about to start.
* Set how long to rewind after automatically skipping to the end of the commercial break. Useful if it's kind of hard to tell if that was in fact the start of the TV show after a block of commercials.

= Showing EDL Information During Playback =

Information about the EDL status for the video can be obtained by showing the [[Codecinfo|codec information]] during playback. Typically this is shown by pressing {{keypress|O}} on a keyboard.

When the codec information for the playing video is shown on screen, e.g. the video and stream codecs being used, framerate, number of dropped frames etc. information about the EDL status will also be displayed. Edit decision list information is prefixed with '''edl:''' and followed by a dash or letters followed by numbers. The letter describes the type of edit and the following number the count of that type. For example, '''edl: c4s8''' means there are 4 commercial breaks and 8 scene markers.

= Using Scene Markers =
